Hatha
Hatha Yoga strengthens and stretches the body, focusing on conscious breathing while in the postures. Hatha Yoga level 1 & 2 teaches the fundamentals of a safe, healing yoga practice. Level 1 & 2 classes are designed for students with some yoga experience but beginners are also welcome.
Pranayama and Yoga Nidra
In this class there is a focus on circulation of prana/life force through breath awareness followed by deep relaxation called Yoga Nidra or Yogic Sleep. Yoga Nidra is a state of consciousness between sleeping and being awake. The teacher will guide the student with a set of verbal instruction into a state where the body is fully relaxed, and the mind enters a calm state of body awareness. Little movement is required and all levels can benefit from this stress relieving practice of deep relaxation.
Yin
A passive practice, Yin Yoga involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for 3 to 5 minutes, accessing deeper layers of fascia. Yin Yoga was originally introduced by Paulie Zink. Suitable for all levels.
Gentle
This class is an individualized opportunity to gently explore and tune into the body with a meditative frame of mind while increasing flexibility, strength, and well-being. Our approach incorporates a strong but gentle physical practice, deep attention to breath and a weaving of meditation and inner awareness into every moment and movement.
Dharma Yoga
Dharma Yoga is a graceful, yet challenging practice based on Sri Dharma Mittra’s 50+ years of classical Hatha yoga teachings. Dharma Mittra is the creator of the famous 908 Asana chart that has been a staple in ashrams, yoga studios and homes since it was introduced nearly 30 years ago. Dharma Mittra turned 82 in May of 2021 and still teaches in Manhattan. Warm up includes a few rounds of Surya Namaskara (sun salutations), then moves into the Shiva Namaskara vinyasa. This practice includes standing balancing poses, backbends, forward folds, inversions and twists. The class ends with a long guided savasana (relaxation) and pranayama (breathing techniques). Dharma Level 1 is a very therapeutic practice and can be modified to suit those new to yoga, but at the same time offers more challenging variations for students who are more advanced.
Yo-Chi
This is an invitation to joyful and safe movement to reduce stress, enhance awareness and tone the mind and body. The Long Life Practice is based on mindful movement. Experience it as a practice to generate increased flexibility and well-being. While gentle yoga builds inner strength and calms the mind, Gigong movements enhance the mind-body connection and energize the body.
Kundalini
Each class features a kriya, or set of physical exercises, pranayama (breathwork) and meditation, using the the sounds of the gong and other sound healing instruments. Singing, dancing, chanting and mantra meditation are frequent parts of classes and allow students to enter deep states of relaxation, happiness and peace.
